What Kind Of Compression Socks Do I Need For Flying?
Graduated Compression Stockings
The Journal of Advanced Nursing published a study of almost 2,500 people taking flights over a 2 year time span.
They wore knee length graduated compression stockings and analyzed the risk of developing a DVT (deep vein thrombosis or blood clot).
The study showed that 2 people of the 1,237 people in the study got DVT after traveling on a long flight.
This was compared to 46 of 1,245 people who did not wear the compression stockings.
So those people who did not wear the socks were 12 ½ times likelier to get a DVT.
Researchers concluded that if you wear the stockings if appears to be good at providing a reduction of getting a DVT.
Why Wear Compression Socks When Flying?

A study showed that wearing compression socks on long flights may provide a reduction of blood clots in your legs by more than twelve times.
DVT or deep vein thrombosis, a type of blood clot that can develop in your legs, arm, or torso, can be very dangerous.
They can develop and “break-off” traveling through your blood stream to your lungs and be life threatening.
This can cause a pulmonary embolism.
If you sit still for a long time, as you do on long airplane trips, you can be at risk for these types of clots.

Most compression socks are designed to be worn while you are awake during the day and taken off at night while you are sleeping or when you bathe.
If you are on an airplane flight to help your circulation while seated for an extended period of time, it is ok to wear them for the whole flight an then a few hours post flight.
