Lymphedema refers to swelling, generally in one of your legs or arms.
This condition is most commonly caused by the damage of or removal of one of your lymph nodes as part of cancer treatment. The blockage ends up draining and filling one or both of your arms or legs.
There is currently no cure, but early diagnosis and diligent care can allow you to manage it comfortably.
If you feel a heaviness or tightness and experience swelling of part of all of your arm/leg, you may be experiencing the symptoms of Lymphedema.
Restricted range of motion, discomfort, aching, and recurring infections are also symptoms that should prompt you to visit a doctor.
If your doctor has already diagnosed you with Lymphedema and you see a sudden and dramatic increase in swelling, return to them soon for further guidance and information.
Older age, obesity to excess weight, and Rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis can all lead to increased risk of Lymphedema.
The condition of Lymphedema itself can lead to serious complications, including infections and lymphangiosarcoma.
- Protect your arms and legs against injury to your afforded limbs. Burns, scrapes, and cuts can all invite in infection. Protect yourself when around sharp objects, like by shaving with an electric razor and wearing gloves when you cook or garden.
- Rest your leg and arm while recovering. Following treatment, stretching and exercise are encouraged but avoid strenuous activities until you have recovered fully from any surgery or radiation treatment.
- Do not heat your arm or leg and do not apply ice to the affected limb. Protect the limb from extreme cold temperatures.
