Do you suffer from varicose veins?
Do you have pain, discoloration, or leg ulcers?
In need of compression stockings for them?
Varicose veins do not always require treatment. However, you may require treatment if the condition is causing you pain, if you are suffering from complications like discoloration and leg ulcers, and for cosmetic reasons.
Usually, doctors recommend that their patients undergo self-treatment for about six months. This self-care regimen will typically involve regular exercise, elevating the affected legs while resting, minimizing periods of standing up, and wearing compression stockings.
Compression stockings for varicose veins were developed in 1848 when William Brown applied for a patent for the first elastic compression stocking. Soon after, the use of these stockings has been proven to aid in reducing the symptoms associated with varicose veins, including discomfort and swelling.
How Compression Stockings Work
The hosiery can provide relief to people with varicose veins by putting pressure on the affected veins. The stockings put most pressure on the ankles and gradually reduce tension toward the knees and thighs. This pressure forces the blood to flow toward the heart.
These stockings may be used as a part of a long-term treatment if other treatments do not work for you or are simply unsuitable. Pregnant women with varicose veins may also wear these stockings for the duration of their pregnancy.
Different Types Of Compression Stockings
These stockings are available in different colors, lengths and foot styles. Usually, class 1 or light compression or class 2 or medium compression stockings are prescribed for people with varicose veins. There are also compression tights available.
Wearing The Stockings
Patients with deep venous incompetence are advised to wear these stockings for the rest of their lives, even after undergoing surgery. This condition occurs when the patient has blockages in the deep veins of their legs.
You will need to start wearing the stockings as soon as you get out of bed. It is not recommended to wear these stockings while sleeping.
Initially, you may find that wearing the stockings can be quite uncomfortable, especially during summer. However, it is crucial to wear the stockings so that you can reap the benefits these offer.
Ensuring A Proper Fit
When putting on the stockings, you have to ensure that the right amount of compression is applied to all parts of your leg. These stockings should not be allowed to roll down. Otherwise, a tight band around your leg will be formed.
Should you feel any discomfort with the stockings, consult your physician. He or she may refer you to a company that can make custom stockings for you. If you notice dryness in your legs due to the compression stockings, you can apply moisturizing cream on the affected area before turning in for bed.
The stockings should be replaced every three to six months. If these become damaged before this period, consult your doctor as the stockings may no longer be effective.
Doctors typically prescribe two stockings to their patients. This ensures that you always have clean stockings while the other set is being washed.
