It depends on the type of lymphedema sleeve that you have.
There are 2 types of lymphedema garments:
- Nighttime (or Overnight) Compression Garments
- Daytime Compression Garments
Nighttime or Overnight Compression Garments
These are specifically made to wear while you sleep and apply a mild compression.
They are less snug fitting up against your skin…so, these types of lymphedema sleeves are ok to wear while you sleep.
They give your body a rest from daytime compression use, while still providing the treatment you may require.
Daytime Compression Garments
These are not made to wear overnight while you sleep.
They apply a higher compression than the nighttime garments, which makes them unsuitable to wear at night.
They can also slip, bind, bunch, fold, and possibly create a tourniquet effect while lying down.
The gradient pressure from these garments are better for daytime activities.
Who May Nighttime Compression Garments Be Good For
- You get creeping refill from compression garment wear
- You have skin thickening that persists and is localised
- You are a daytime compression garment wearer
- You have custom compression garments
- Your swelling fluctuates
- You struggle with discoloration
Benefits Of Nighttime Compression Garments
- Provide treatment overnight while you are sleeping
- Can help ease the application of your daytime garments
- May help to ease the management of lymphedema and other similar symptoms
- Have a lower compression level to help prevent lack of blood flow and further complications
Types Of Nighttime or Overnight Compression Wear Garments
Mostly these types of garments are a bit bigger and have more bulk to them than the daytime versions. They have a bit more padding and adjustment straps to set the amount of compression that you need.
Foam Liner With Straps – the amount of compression is regulated by an external strap system. These must be set by a certified fitter, lymphedema therapist or the garment manufacturer, to ensure proper fit and compression.
Short Stretch Binders – these contain no foam in them, and are sometimes referred to as inelastic. Ok for day and/or night use but less compression must be used at night. These are mostly for more extreme cases of edema that need to be contained.
Quilted Fabric With Foam Fill – the compression is provided by the outer sleeve, or can be from both the fabric and foam to get the optimal compression level. Outer jackets are sometimes used to provide extra compression if needed.
