The garments are flexible and are made to be tighter at the bottom than they are at the top, which is key to keeping the lymph fluid moving.

The method for reducing the symptoms of lymphedema in the legs is to aid the muscles in moving fluid around the lower extremities. 

When leg muscles are active, part of their duty is to push lymph fluid upwards against gravity.
