Benefits of Compression Stockings
Varicose veins and other vein related issues affect close to forty percent of the US population.
Symptoms can include swollen ankles and uncomfortable leg cramps.
Varicose veins are the result of damage to the vein valves.
This damage impedes the blood from flowing up (against gravity) through your legs to your heart.
When the blood flow is hindered from flowing towards your heart, blood pools in the calves and ankles causing the swelling and cramping to begin.
In time, the blood restricted veins become purplish in color and show beneath the skin.
If you are experiencing the unpleasant symptoms from venous conditions, the compression stockings may help.
Compression stockings will actually alleviate the symptoms:
- Varicose vein symptoms include:
- aching legs (sometimes with the sensation of heaviness)
- Fatigue
- Leg Cramps
- Swollen ankles
- Restless legs
How to Use Compression Stockings
Knowing how and when to put on compression stockings is very important for getting the most benefit from them.
Upon awakening in the morning, put the compressions socks on while still in bed.
Do NOT sit up or get out of bed. Why? The horizontal position during sleep effectively allows gravity to work to your benefit and the blood flow through the leg veins works more normally.
The moment you sit or stand into any vertical position and that upward flow of blood through the vein valves, towards the heart is once again compromised.
By putting the compression stockings on first thing in the morning, they will actually assist in supporting normal blood circulation in your legs, reducing the painful symptoms during the day.
Choosing the Correct Type of Compression Stockings:
Consulting a physician is always advised when selecting a compression level for the stockings.
There are 4 Standard Compression Levels:
- Mild compression: Used for mildly restricted blood flow
- Moderate compression: If you are experiencing spider veins or varicose veins, this level will be more effective in supporting appropriate leg circulation.
- Firm and Extra Firm: Intended for the more extreme cases to include deep vein thrombosis, lymphatic edema and/or leg ulcers.
Compression stockings, when used properly will help alleviate discomfort from vein issues.
